Thawra! (Revolution!) honors the artist’s Palestinian heritage and the current geopolitical issues facing her community. It connects the sometimes distant-feeling theme of climate change with the real experiences of people, land, and displacement.
“The country has already been grappling with the massive (and massively ignored) genocide and subsequent displacement crisis that has been directly affecting my family & people over the past ~2 years, but [the recent additional] tragedy due to the current climate crisis was really another gut punch in the midst of everything else. This design is an attempt to honor our martyrs (particularly from the village that was wiped out), bring attention to the current genocide, and showcase some elements of Sudanese culture” states Hassan.
With this work, we connect local artists and the 195 District Park with the Providence Climate Justice Plan, centering The Avenue Concept’s vision to provide clear avenues for artists to create joy, dialogue, and inclusion in public art.
