Future Story: Black Locust is a piece reflecting on the Providence Climate Justice Plan’s goal of partnering with community organizations to expand green spaces and parks in frontline communities, which centers on prioritizing tree plantings wherever the heat index is high. The artist provides a musing and a solution for the passerby:
“I imagine Black Locust trees that are planted today, in 2025. Black Locust trees are a popular choice for tree plantings in our frontline communities as they are resilient, grow quickly, have rot-resistant hardwood, and are a beautiful flowering species. I am inspired by the Future Stories Series that accompanies the Climate Justice Plan Report and create my own Future Story that illustrates what the Black Locust trees planted today will grow to become by 2040.”
With this work, we connect local artists and the 195 District Park with the Providence Climate Justice Plan, centering The Avenue Concept’s vision to provide clear avenues for artists to create joy, dialogue, and inclusion in public art.
